Road trip map animation maker: turn a drive into a cinematic video
25 August 2026
Make a map video of a road trip from a Google Maps route or a GPX track. The clip on this page is the Garden Route, exported from Wander.
The video at the top is the Garden Route: a car following the South African coast. That is a road trip map animation. The drive as a line, the vehicle moving, the camera following. It is the clip you put at the start of a vlog, in a TikTok, or on a recap when stills of the dashboard are not enough.
You can make one without a motion-graphics template and without tracing the road in After Effects. Wander does it on Android. Paste a Google Maps route, import a GPX, or tap the stops, then export. iPhone is coming soon.
Maps line vs the road you actually drove
A flight is two cities and an arc. A road trip is the shape of the land, and the video only works if the path is honest. A directions line from Google Maps is the legal driving route, which is fine for something like Cape Town to Knysna as a plan. A GPX from a Garmin, a phone recorder, or a bike computer is the road you actually drove, including the scenic detour Maps would have skipped.
Use Maps when you are showing the itinerary. Use GPX when the point is the road you took. Wander imports both: one editor, two inputs, one MP4.
Get the drive in
From Google Maps, build the trip with stops, share directions, copy the link, and paste it into Wander. Cut fuel stops you do not want on screen. Details are in the Google Maps to video guide.
From GPX, export a track from your watch, bike computer, or phone and import it. Dense tracks still animate. You may want fewer labelled stops so a 9:16 frame is not a stack of names. If you do not have a file, tap towns in order. That is how you rebuild a classic like the Causeway Coastal Route or the Garden Route from a list.
Keep labelled stops to the headline places. The line can be detailed; the labels should not.
If the GPX includes the drive to the supermarket the night before, trim it before import or delete the junk stops after. Hiking GPX and road GPX both work. A hike usually wants a slower feel and a topographic style. A highway wants satellite or a night style and a car. Very long tracks, a full Ring Road or a week of van travel, still export. Label the days or the cities. The line can be the whole loop.
Duration and aspect
Road-trip animations get used in three places. TikTok and Reels want 9:16 and about 10 to 20 seconds (see the TikTok route animation guide). A YouTube intro wants 16:9 and 15 to 30 seconds under a voiceover. Vertical looks like a phone clip in a desktop player. A website or recap wants 16:9, looping, muted. The banner on this page is that use.
Wander exports all three aspects. Pick before you render. Do not export square and hope TikTok makes it work. Fifteen seconds is the default in the app and a fair length for a one-region drive. A cross-country route can go longer, but on TikTok you are compressing a week into a glance. Edit the stops, not the frame rate.
Style it like a trip, not a delivery tracker
Skip anything that looks like a logistics dashboard. You want a travel still that moves. Satellite and a car for a coast (Causeway, Garden Route, Amalfi-type roads). Topographic and a car when elevation is the point. Golden Hour or Film with a campervan for an overland clip (campervan is Pro). Midnight Drive and a car for a night interstate.
Free vehicles for a drive are car and bicycle, plus boat if part of the trip is water. Pro adds campervan, bus, SUV, and motorcycle. All 18 map styles are on Free. You are not paying for a nicer map. You are paying for 4K, no watermark, extra vehicles, and more than five saved projects.
Preview the camera, then export
Play the full animation. Watch for the vehicle leaving the road because a stop geocoded to the town centre instead of the highway, labels covering the path on a 9:16 crop, or a duration so long the car crawls. Fix stops in the editor, then export 1080p (Free, watermark) or 4K (Pro, clean). Save to the library and share out.
Wander does not add music. For TikTok, add audio in the TikTok editor. For YouTube, lay the map clip under a track you already have the rights to.
Wander is not a dashcam editor. It will not splice petrol-station clips onto the map, and it is not Google My Maps. If you need a documentary-grade 3D globe with custom buildings, that is a Cinema 4D job. If you need a phone-made map of this drive, that is Wander.
Free and Pro
| Free | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Export | 1080p with watermark | 4K, no watermark |
| Road vehicles | Car (plus bike, boat, train, plane) | Campervan, bus, SUV, motorcycle too |
| Projects | 5 saved trips | Unlimited |
| Price | £0 | £4.99/month or £24.99/year |
A watermarked Free export is still a usable TikTok test. A YouTube channel intro is usually worth Pro.
